Khat Bell remains in awe of ex-teammate Bernadeth Pons

In the world of volleyball, few matchups are as thrilling as those between old friends and former teammates.

Such was the case on Tuesday night when Creamline’s Bernadeth Pons and Chery Tiggo’s Khat Bell faced off in a gripping four-set battle that showcased not just their competitive spirit but also their deep respect for one another.

The night belonged to the Creamline Cool Smashers, who edged out Bell’s Chery Tiggo in a fierce contest, 25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19.

It was a high-stakes showdown where both players shone brightly, yet it was Pons who emerged as the standout performer.

With a Premier Volleyball League career-high of 25 points, complemented by 23 excellent receptions and seven digs, Pons played a pivotal role in her team's victory.

Bell, not to be overshadowed, delivered an impressive 31 points, along with nine receptions and eight digs.

Despite the loss, her performance was a testament to her skill and tenacity on the court.

As the game concluded, it was clear that while they were fierce competitors, the admiration between Pons and Bell was mutual and profound.

Reflecting on their shared history, Bell expressed a mix of nostalgia and admiration for Pons.

The two had played together briefly four years ago when Pons was at a crossroads between indoor and sand volleyball.

“I’m kinda jealous of Erica Staunton because I didn’t get the chance to play fully with Bernadeth Pons,” Bell admitted, referencing Creamline’s American reinforcement. “Me and Pons played together during a time when she had to choose between indoor and sand volleyball, and she is obviously amazing in sand as well, so she went to play outdoors.”

In 2019, Pons dedicated herself to beach volleyball, competing in various leagues and representing the Philippines in international tournaments.

Her return to indoor volleyball came only in June 2023, when she signed with Creamline.

Bell’s praise for Pons was effusive.

“I’m so jealous that Erica got the chance to play with her. Pons is absolutely amazing, she’s so crafty and she’s like an artist. There are also some things that I picked up from Pons when I got the chance to play with her as well. She’s gonna be Pons, she’s gonna be what that is for sure," she said.

For Pons, the chance to face Bell on the court was a moment of both excitement and challenge.

“Unang-una, na-excite din talaga ako na makalaban siya kasi Khat Bell, alam ko kung paano siya maglaro, eh. Talagang totodo talaga siya,” Pons shared, highlighting the competitive edge and respect she feels towards her former teammate.

As the standings in Pool A now show Creamline and Chery Tiggo evenly matched at 2-1, trailing behind leader PLDT, the stage is set for more exhilarating encounters.

The clash between Pons and Bell is a vivid reminder of the intense yet respectful nature of competitive sports, where even in the heat of battle, admiration for one another's skills shines through.
