Capital1 takes a pivotal step toward a potential dream season finale in the Premier Volleyball League as it selects the top overall pick in the second PVL Rookie Draft on Sunday at the Novotel Hotel in Cubao.
Following three challenging conferences that yielded a 7-24 win-loss record, the Solar Spikers are determined to execute a complete turnaround by securing the top talent from a deep and competitive rookie pool. The draft, which begins at 7 p.m., is expected to reshape team rosters and further elevate the league's competitive landscape.
Headlining the 57-player rookie class is three-time UAAP MVPBella Belen of National U, whose all-around skills and championship pedigree make her the consensus top prospect.
Alongside her are elite standouts from the UAAP, NCAA, provincial circuits and even overseas hopefuls – a testament to the PVL’s ever-expanding reach and appeal.
“After one year and three months, we’re finally close to completing this team,” said Roger Gorayeb in Pilipino, former head coach of Capital1 and now the team’s consultant. “When I started, there wasn’t even a full roster. Now, after 15 months, the situation is looking up. That’s why it’s crucial we select the player we really want.”
Now under the strategic leadership of Brazilian Olympic coach Jorge de Brito, the Solar Spikers are aiming to build a competitive core that can challenge the PVL's elite.
During the league’s two-day Draft Combine, players were assessed in biometric evaluations, athletic and skill tests, and scrimmages. Gorayeb shared that if given the choice, he would lean toward selecting Belen, praising her versatility and proven success with the NU Lady Bulldogs.
Galeries Tower will pick second, followed by Farm Fresh and Nxled, who complete the four-team lottery draw. The remainder of the first round will see ZUS Coffee, Cignal, Choco Mucho, Chery Tiggo, PLDT, Akari, Petro Gazz, and Creamline make their selections in that order.
In the succeeding round, the Chameleons will have the first pick, followed by the Solar Spikers, Foxies, and Highrisers, with the rest of the order unchanged.
Notable prospects in this year’s draft include AC Miner, Tia Andaya, Alohi Robins-Hardy, Alleiah Malaluan, Jyne Soreño, Erin Pangilinan, Pia Abbu, Sheena Toring, Chenie Tagaod, Jean Asis, Riza Nogales and Mycah Go – further showcasing the depth and quality of the 2025 rookie class.
This year’s applicant turnout – 10 more than the league’s inaugural draft – also highlights the league’s rapidly growing popularity and prestige. From a domestic league to an increasingly recognized platform for global and regional talent, the PVL is quickly emerging as a premier destination for aspiring professional volleyball players.
As the PVL Rookie Draft gets underway, focus will be on the Solar Spikers and whether their top pick can serve as the catalyst for a new, winning era.
