Bernadeth Pons shines in absence of Creamline stars

In a season where Creamline's lineup has been significantly challenged by absences, it was a moment for the bench players to rise to the occasion.

With key wing spikers sidelined, including Jema Galanza, and MVP stars Tots Carlos and Alyssa Valdez still unavailable, the Cool Smashers turned to their reserves.

Michele Gumabao has stepped up admirably, but it was Bernadeth Pons who truly stole the spotlight on Tuesday evening.

In a high-stakes match against Chery Tiggo, Pons delivered a career performance, leading Creamline to a four-set victory: 25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19.

The 5-foot-7 outside hitter from Talisay, Negros Occidental showcased her exceptional skills with a Premier Volleyball League career-high 25 points.

Her contribution didn’t stop there; she also anchored the defense with 23 excellent receptions and seven digs, proving to be a linchpin for the Cool Smashers.

For Pons, her role on the team is a reflection of her commitment and adaptability.

“Actually, every conference, same lang naman eh. Kasi first six ka or hindi, kailangan mo rin talagang gawin 'yung role mo. Kung ipasok ka, or kahit nasa labas ka man, meron pa rin kaniya-kanyang role,” the 27-year-old explained.

The Cool Smashers have faced a conference of adjustments.

With Galanza away on national team duties and Carlos and Valdez yet to make their appearances, the team’s depth has been tested.

Pons, a former national team beach volleyball star, has seamlessly integrated into the starting lineup, demonstrating why her versatility is a vital asset for Creamline.

Reflecting on her performance, Pons noted that her drive was fueled by a desire to improve after a less impactful showing in their previous match against Farm Fresh Foxies, where she was limited to just nine points despite a team win.

“Personally, 'yung last game ko,” Pons said with a wry smile. “Kasi medyo disappointed ako sa sarili ko, sa performance ko kasi alam ko na mas may ibibigay pa 'ko, mas kaya ko pang mag-contribute sa team.”

The victory against Chery Tiggo was a crucial one for Creamline, marking back-to-back wins after a heart-breaking five-set loss to PLDT in their opener.

With this win, the Cool Smashers have evened their record to 2-1, now tied with Chery Tiggo for the second and third spots in Pool A. They trail only the 2-0 PLDT High Speed Hitters, who are currently in a fierce battle with the Nxled Chameleons.
